Message from the Gainesville Deanery, Fr. John Phillips, V.F.

Catholic Pastors Oppose Richard Spencer and his Racist Message

On behalf of the Catholic community, pastors of the Catholic Churches in Gainesville have united to oppose the scheduled appearance of white nationalist Richard Spencer and his racist message. He is scheduled to speak at the University of Florida on Oct. 19.

Father John Phillips, pastor of Holy Faith Catholic Church and spokesman for the Catholic Churches, shared this joint statement:

“We want to make it clear that white supremacy and its many manifestations are not consistent with Christianity. Jesus said it most simply: “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12)

The community is invited to pray for racial equality and respect on Oct. 18, at 7:00 pm, in response to Richard Spencer’s presentation. The prayer Vigil will be held at Holy Faith Church. “We will continue to give witness to the equality of all people in Gainesville and our Nation.”
